FSSAI also provides licensing and registration for food businesses, which is mandatory for operating legally in the food sector.

To use an FSSAI license, the following steps need to be followed:

  1. Determine the License Type: FSSAI offers three different types of licenses, depending on the scale and nature of the food business: a. Basic Registration: Suitable for small-scale food businesses with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakhs. b. State License: Required for medium-sized food businesses with an annual turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crore. c. Central License: Applicable to large-scale food businesses with an annual turnover exceeding ₹20 crore.

  2. Application Submission: Fill out the appropriate application form available on the FSSAI website and submit it along with the necessary documents. The documents typically include proof of identity, proof of address, and details about the food business, such as the premises, machinery, and food categories involved.

  3. Inspection and Verification: After submitting the application, an FSSAI official will conduct an inspection of the premises to assess compliance with food safety regulations. This inspection may include aspects such as hygiene, infrastructure, storage facilities, and documentation.

  4. License Issuance: Once the inspection is completed successfully, the FSSAI will review the application and grant the appropriate license within a specified time frame. The license will contain a unique registration or license number, which must be displayed on all food packages and promotional materials.

  5. Compliance and Renewal: Food businesses with an FSSAI license must comply with the food safety and hygiene regulations outlined by FSSAI. Regular inspections may be conducted to ensure ongoing compliance. The license is typically valid for 1-5 years, after which it needs to be renewed before its expiry date.

It is essential to note that using an FSSAI license is crucial for ensuring the safety and quality of food products and maintaining consumer trust. Operating without a valid license can lead to penalties, closure of the business, or legal consequences.
